Anya Taylor-Joy Joins ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ as New Elf Character

Taylor-Joy will play Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm, in Andy Serkis’ upcoming return to Middle-earth.

Anya Taylor-Joy is heading to Middle-earth.

The actress has joined the cast of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ the next live-action film in the franchise from Warner Bros. and New Line. Taylor-Joy will play Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm described as a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil, played by Lee Pace. The character is reportedly original to the film and does not appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s books.

The film will be directed by Andy Serkis, who is also reprising his role as Gollum. Set between the events of ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ follows Aragorn and Gandalf as they search for Gollum in hopes of learning more about Bilbo’s ring, the One Ring that could threaten all of Middle-earth. The story draws from the larger timeline surrounding Gollum’s movements before the events of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring.’

Taylor-Joy joins a growing ensemble that blends returning franchise names with new additions. Ian McKellen is set to return as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo and Lee Pace as Thranduil, while the new cast also includes Kate Winslet as Marigol, Jamie Dornan as Strider and Leo Woodall as Halvard. Serkis’ return gives the project a direct connection to Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, where his motion-capture performance as Gollum became one of the defining achievements of modern fantasy filmmaking.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Zane Weiner are producing, with Ken Kamins, Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish of The Imaginarium executive producing. Walsh and Boyens wrote the screenplay with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, keeping the project closely tied to the creative team behind Jackson’s original ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Hobbit’ films. Warner Bros. has dated the film for Dec. 17, 2027.

Taylor-Joy’s casting adds another high-profile name to a franchise already built on generational recognition. After leading projects like ‘The Queen’s Gambit,’ ‘The Menu,’ ‘Last Night in Soho’ and ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ she brings an icy, commanding screen presence that feels naturally suited to the world of elves, kings and ancient power. Seren’s connection to Thranduil also suggests the film may spend meaningful time in or around the Woodland Realm, expanding the political and mythological terrain surrounding the hunt for Gollum.

That choice could help ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ avoid feeling like a narrowly focused side quest. The title points to one of the franchise’s most tragic and essential figures, but the surrounding cast suggests a broader Middle-earth story involving elves, rangers, old alliances and the slow reawakening of forces that will eventually lead into the War of the Ring. By placing Taylor-Joy’s Seren inside Thranduil’s world, the film appears to be building a new character who can operate between palace intrigue, wilderness pursuit and the darker intelligence work required when the One Ring begins drawing danger back toward the surface.

The casting also continues the franchise’s current effort to expand beyond direct retellings of Tolkien’s most familiar chapters while remaining connected to the cinematic legacy of Jackson’s films. Following the animated ‘War of the Rohirrim’ and ongoing television expansion through ‘The Rings of Power,’ ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ represents Warner Bros. and New Line’s most direct attempt to bring audiences back to the live-action Middle-earth of the early 2000s, with Jackson’s creative circle involved and Serkis stepping behind the camera.

For Taylor-Joy, the role adds another major franchise to an increasingly varied slate. She will next appear in Apple TV+’s ‘Lucky’ and Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three,’ making her one of the rare actors moving between some of the biggest active fantasy and sci-fi worlds in Hollywood.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is set to open in theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
