Bigelow returns with a blistering political thriller where survival feels like a countdown clock to annihilation.
Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for Kathryn Bigelowâs A House of Dynamite, a nerve-shredding political thriller that premiered earlier this week at the Venice Film Festival. The film stars Idris Elba as the U.S. president and Rebecca Ferguson as Captain Olivia Walker, a military communications officer tasked with guiding a fractured chain of command through an unthinkable crisis: an imminent nuclear strike on Chicago.
The trailer leans into claustrophobic tension over spectacle, showcasing Bigelowâs signature control of tempo and dread. Stark images of war rooms, hurried intelligence briefings, and a president torn between military advice and moral consequence set the stage for a relentless countdown. Fergusonâs commanding presence as Walker anchors the chaos, her measured authority standing in sharp contrast to the spiraling panic around her.
Joining Elba and Ferguson is an expansive ensemble: Jared Harris, Gabriel Basso, Anthony Ramos, Tracy Letts, Moses Ingram, Greta Lee, Jason Clarke, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Kaitlyn Dever, and WNBA star Angel Reese in her feature debut. Written by Noah Oppenheim (Jackie), the film unfolds almost entirely within high-security bunkers and command centers, echoing Bigelowâs Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker in its precision and intensity.

Speaking at Venice, Bigelow underscored the urgency behind the film: âHow can we call this defense when the inevitable outcome is total destruction? I wanted to make a film that confronts this paradox â to explore the madness of a world that lives under the constant shadow of annihilation, yet rarely speaks of it.â
Critical response out of Venice has been strong. The Hollywood Reporterâs David Rooney called the film âan unrelenting chokehold thriller so controlled, kinetic and unsettlingly immersive that you stagger out at the end of it wondering if the world will still be intact.â Early reviews suggest that A House of Dynamite positions itself as both a gripping piece of entertainment and a provocative political statement â the kind of dual achievement that has defined Bigelowâs career.
A House of Dynamite opens in select U.K. theaters on October 3 and the U.S. on October 10 before launching globally on Netflix October 24. It will Also Have its North American Premiere at NYFF 63.
