Dylan O’Brien and Diane Lane Clash in Tense Family Thriller ‘Anniversary’ Trailer

A mother’s suspicions threaten to unravel her son’s relationship in Jan Komasa’s gripping drama.

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Anniversary, a psychological family thriller directed by Jan Komasa (Corpus Christi, Good Boy). The film, arriving in theaters October 29, stars Dylan O’Brien as Josh, a young man who shocks his family when he brings home his girlfriend Liz (Phoebe Dynevor) — a woman with ties to his mother’s past that prove far more unsettling than expected.

Diane Lane anchors the drama as Ellen, Josh’s protective mother, whose discomfort with her son’s new partner quickly escalates into confrontation. As revealed in the trailer, Liz was once Ellen’s student — and her ideological leanings push Ellen to question her intentions. “She’s radical in her ideology,” Ellen warns. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that she’s attached herself to Josh.”

The film also stars Kyle Chandler as the family’s patriarch, with Madeline Brewer, Zoey Deutch, Mckenna Grace, and Daryl McCormack rounding out the ensemble.

The script, penned by Lori Rosene-Gambino from a story she co-developed with Komasa, doesn’t just pit a mother against her son’s girlfriend — it turns the generational clash into a microcosm of larger societal divides. The trailer teases tense dinner-table confrontations, emotional breakdowns, and ideological showdowns that transform domestic strife into political allegory.

“You couldn’t bend her your way,” Josh lashes back at his mother in one of the trailer’s most charged moments. “It drives you insane.”

Lane, who recently appeared in Netflix’s A Man in Full and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, described the project as “a powerful, timely story” that reflects America’s current identity crisis. “Jan Komasa’s brilliant direction of Lori Rosene-Gambino’s script holds a mirror to our national identity crisis through the lens of one family,” Lane said.
