Weâre excited for the sequelâs witchy, whimsical fashion.
This summer, weâre all eagerly waiting for the autumn to roll around, because on the 18th of September, weâll finally be able to watch Practical Magic 2. Those of us who grew up watching the Owens sisters drinking midnight margaritas with their kooky aunts have great expectations for the sequel. We want Stevie Nicks on the soundtrack again, we want the videographers to use retro cameras â or at least a filter or two â to mimic the first filmâs aesthetic, and we want Warner Bros to give us the same magical, cosy feeling. One other thing we would like is for our comfort characters to have a good wardrobe. Sally and Gillian Owens gave us the best 90s whimsical style inspo, and we need more. Judianna Makovsky, the original costume designer, may or may not be returning for the sequel. Makovsky told ELLE that her fashion inspirations for the first film included Stevie Nicks and Marianne Faithfull. Judianna, weâre all rooting for you to return. Otherwise, I hope Warner Bros finds this article, because laid out here is the style weâre hoping to see on the 18th of Septemberâ¦
The first look from the original that we have to discuss is Sandra Bullockâs (Sallyâs) light wash jeans and white tank top. This is a classic for a reason â a look that can be imitated by all of us, and is flattering and affordable. Sally wears her Leviâs denim and crochet top with her hair in a half-up, half-down style, a combination that oozes effortless 90s style. Relaxed and relatable. Her character is a mother who rejects witchcraft (for much of the film) and wants to live a simple life, so it makes sense for her fashion taste to be laid back and casual. Despite the accessibility of this outfit, Bullockâs long, dark hair which contrasts with the light fabrics she wears, and her toned arms and bone structure, elevate this look above the average jeans-and-tank get-up. As excited as we are for new garments in the sequel, we hope Sally hasnât strained too far from her casual, girl-next-door, down-to-earth roots.

Perhaps the most iconic outfit pairing that comes to mind when one hears âPractical Magicâ is Sallyâs floral maxis with comfy cardigans. When she wasnât wearing her jeans, Sally was always wearing a floaty dress or skirt. For one scene, Bullock had a white sundress with a green leaf pattern and ruffled hem, with an open-knit cardigan that the character owned in two colours. In another, she wore a Collette Dinnigan S/S 98 silk dress with lace and rose motifs. Other times, Sally was in a witchy ankle-length skirt with a neutral tank top and hertrusty cardigans. If anyone is planning to dress up for the film release, this outfit should be your go-to. Without Sallyâs whimsical dresses and long skirts, the cinematic universe wouldnât be the same.
Sally wasnât the only Owens sister who gave us plenty of 90s witchy style inspiration, especially when it came to floral designs and beautiful dresses. Nicole Kidmanâs (Gillianâs) costumes were slightly less casual and conservative, and more seductive and cultivated than Bullockâs, but both actorsâ wardrobes were very similar in their botanical themes. One look in particular that weâve never been able to get enough of is Gillianâs green velvet dress with her long, fiery locks falling over her shoulders. This slip dress was custom-made by Makovsky, inspired by a similar one from Fred Segal. Featuring a darker foliar patterned design beneath the dressâ jade cups, the fabric contrasts with her vibrant red hair, making it one of the prettiest and most memorable outfits in the film. Another notable piece Kidman wore is the black sheer top from the Vivienne Tam A/W 97 collection, embroidered with delicate pink flowers. The contrast between the embroidery and the sex appeal of the fabric of Gillianâs dress adds powerful symbolism in this scene, where she and Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnijic) have a passionate encounter that ends terribly. No one does sultry witch-bitch better than Gilly Owens, and while the sequel will focus largely on the next generation of Owens, we hope Warner Bros havenât retired her sex appeal and zealous energy.
POPULAR ON THE CINEMA GROUP
Gillianâs outfits featured intricate details and meaningful accessories. Kidmanâs character embraces her sexuality and her magic more than her sister does, and throughout the first film, this was reflected in elements of her costume like her jewellery. Gillian can be seen wearing a vintage black bead choker â a piece which holds seductive connotations â and necklaces made of Tigerâs Eye crystal. Tigerâs Eye is used spiritually to promote confidence, energy, and protection for the wearer. This is in keeping with Gillianâs fun and wild lifestyle and persona. In the sequel, the sisters should once again wear symbolic crystals and occult items, as witches would! We canât skip Gillianâs skinny oval sunglasses, one pair in blood orange and another black. Nicole Kidman recently treated us to an Instagram post captioned âThe witches are backâ, showing the starsâ first day on the set of the sequel. The reel featured Kidman and Bullock smiling in an embrace, both wearing floral maxi dresses in keeping with the original style. Bullock wears her hair messily half-up, half-down once again, and Kidman wears a strawberry blonde wig â tied back with a dark ribbon â with a fringe framing her face. Sallyâs flowy dress has a black and white pattern, a V neck cut, and sleeves to the elbow, whereas Gillianâs is a tighter silhouette, magenta lace with puffed elbows. This comforting and reminiscent sneak peek of our favourites has us tingling with anticipation of their return, and trusting that weâll have plenty more witchy fashion inspiration come September.
