Jason Momoa to Play Lobo in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’

Jason Momoa trades his Aquaman trident for Lobo’s cigar, joining Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the iconic alien bounty hunter.

Jason Momoa, previously synonymous with the role of Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, is set to stay in the DC family. The actor has been officially cast as Lobo, the rough-and-tumble alien bounty hunter, in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Directed by James Gunn, the film will be the second installment in the reimagined DC Universe, following Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.

Lobo, a beloved antihero from the DC comics pantheon, made his debut in Omega Men No. 3 in 1983. Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo is a cigar-chomping, blue-skinned mercenary known for his chaotic moral compass, extraordinary strength, and rapid healing abilities. The character has been a fan favorite for decades, often appearing as both a nemesis and reluctant ally to the DC universe’s most powerful figures.

Momoa’s casting is especially notable given his history with DC films. He first appeared as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) before reprising the role in Justice League (2017) and headlining the billion-dollar hit Aquaman (2018). While his tenure as the King of Atlantis concluded with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), a box office disappointment, fans have long speculated that Momoa was a natural fit for Lobo—a character he’s publicly expressed interest in playing for years.

The actor confirmed his casting in a post on Instagram, quoting a statement he made during press rounds for The Lost Kingdom: “I hope DC gives me a call about this role.” Alongside the quote, Momoa cheekily captioned, “They called.”

Lobo’s journey to live-action has been a tumultuous one. Various iterations of the character were considered over the years, with Guy Ritchie, Brad Peyton, and Michael Bay each flirting with the idea of adapting the character for film. Dwayne Johnson was even in talks to play Lobo in Peyton’s version, though the project never materialized. On television, Emmett J. Scanlan portrayed Lobo in the SyFy series Krypton, delivering a version of the character that earned a modest fan following.

Momoa’s casting is the first significant instance of an actor transitioning from one major role to another within the DC Universe. When James Gunn and Peter Safran assumed control of DC Studios, they left the door open for fan-favorite actors from the previous regime to remain involved, albeit in new roles. Momoa’s dual tenure as Aquaman and Lobo suggests that Gunn and Safran are open to flexible casting decisions that honor both past and future iterations of the DC Universe.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on Tom King’s critically acclaimed comic series, which follows Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, on an intergalactic quest for justice. Starring House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock as Supergirl, the film is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026. It promises to bring a fresh and gritty take on the Kryptonian hero’s story while setting the tone for the interconnected DC Universe under Gunn and Safran’s leadership.
